About NDA Exam

NDA stands for National Defense Academy, which is the training institute for the cadets of the 3 defence lines of India (Army, Air Force, Navy), while the NDA exam is the whole selection process to find suitable candidates for the academy to train there and join their respective academy. This exam is conducted twice a year and contains a written test and an interview. Candidates who are willing to apply for it must read this post thoroughly and keep a note of the upcoming NDA exam 2022 events.

UPSC has announced NDA (1) & (2) 2022 exam dates. The written exam of NDA (1) was conducted on April 10, 2022. While NDA (2) 2022 exam will be conducted on September 4, 2022. Candidates can check below the complete schedule of the exam.

NDA Eligibility

There is a set eligibility criterion for the candidates to appear for the NDA exam 2022 as prescribed by the UPSC on their official website. Candidates who have applied for the upcoming exam should ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility norms otherwise their candidature might be canceled at any stage. They must fit into the prescribed NDA 2022 eligibility criteria to be able to advance further in the selection process. The eligibility criteria are split into three parameters: age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards. Below you can go through the detailed eligibility norms of the NDA 2 2022 exam as prescribed by the concerned authorities.

Eligibility: Physical Standards
The candidates must fit the prescribed physical eligibility, such as height standards, vision standards, etc. It is essential for the candidates to satisfy the stated NDA exam eligibility criteria as mentioned here. The different physical standards for NDA 2 2022 are as follows:

Age Limit 

The aspirants must fit into the prescribed NDA age limit to be able to take the exam and grab the desired post. The age limit criteria for the NDA exam 2022 for different courses is between 16.5 to 19.5 years. Only unmarried candidates born no earlier than 02 January 2004 and not later than 01 January 2007 are eligible to apply online for the NDA 2 2022 exam.

NDA Vacancy

The total number of vacancies to be recruited through the NDA 2 exam has been released along with the official notification of the UPSC NDA 2022 exam on 18th May 2022. As per NDA 2 2022 Notification, a total of 400 vacancies will be recruited for National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) out of which 370 belong to NDA and the remaining 30 for NA. NDA Admit Card

NDA 2 admit card 2022 was released for all the registered candidates. The link to download the admit card was made available on the official website. Candidates could download the admit card of NDA 2 by logging either with the roll number or registration number. The hard copy of the admit card is not sent to candidates by post.

Details of MSP (Military Service Pay):

  • Officers in the rank of Lieutenant to Brigadier are also entitled to a Military Service Pay(MSP) of 15.500 p.m. (fixed).

Flying Allowance:

  • The Army Aviators (Pilots) serving in the Army Aviation Corps are entitled to a flying allowance at 25,000/- p.m.

NDA Selection

UPSC conducts the NDA exam in two stages which are a written test and an SSB Interview. The first stage is the written exam in which candidates must perform well to be able to proceed further with the selection process. Candidates who clear this stage will be called for SSB Interview. Check out the NDA selection process and its stages which are discussed below: 

  • Pen & Paper Test (written exam): The written exam is the first stage of selection and is conducted in an offline mode. The candidates obtaining the minimum qualifying marks will then be eligible to appear in the next round of selection.
  • SSB Interview: This is the second stage of the NDA 2022 selection process. The SSB Interview tests are conducted for the Intelligence and Personality Test of the candidate. The SSB Interview is also held at 2 stages where 1st round is taken by the Centres/Air Force Selection Boards/Naval Selection Boards. Candidates cracking the 1st round only are eligible to appear in the 2nd interview round.
  • Medical Examination: This stage is of qualifying in nature. Candidates who want to be a part of Indian forces should be medically fit and must qualify for this stage of the selection.
  • Final Merit List: The final merit list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in the written exam and SSB Interview. The final allocation will be done based on the availability of vacancies, fulfilling eligibility criteria, medical fitness, and merit-cum-preferences.

NDA Syllabus

NDA Syllabus for Paper 1

NDA syllabus for Paper 1 comprises topics and sub-topics from Maths. This paper carries 120 questions of Class 10, 11 and 12 standards. Candidates get 2.5 marks for each correct answer and there is also a negative marking of 0.83 marks for each incorrect answers. 

NDA Maths Syllabus 2023

The standard of NDA question paper for the Mathematics section is of Class 11 and 12 levels. Candidates can clear their concepts of Maths by referring to the NCERT books of Class 11 and 12. This section tests the candidate's calculative skills. Let us know the topic-wise NDA Mathematics syllabus.

Matrices and Determinants

Types of matrices, operations on matrices. Determinant of a matrix, basic properties of determinants. Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix, Applications-Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramer’s rule and by Matrix Method.

Integral Calculus and Differential Equations

Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Evaluation of definite integrals—determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves-applications.

Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples. General and particular solution of differential equations, solution of first order and first-degree differential equations of various types—examples. Application in problems of growth and decay.


Angles and their measures in degrees and in radians. Trigonometric ratios. Trigonometric identities Sum and difference formulae. Multiple and Sub-multiple angles. Inverse trigonometric functions. Applications-Height and distance, properties of triangles.

Vector Algebra

Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude, and direction of a vector. Unit and null vectors, the addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of a vector, scalar product, or dot product of two vectors. Vector product or cross product of two vectors. Applications—work done by a force and moment of a force and in geometrical problems.

Analytical Geometry Of Two and Three Dimension

Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system, Distance formula, Equation of a line in various forms. The angle between two lines. Distance of a point from a line. Equation of a circle in standard and in a general form. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Eccentricity and axis of a conic. Point in a three-dimensional space, the distance between two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Equation two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Equation of a plane and a line in various forms. Angle between two lines and angle between two planes. Equation of a sphere.

Statistics and Probability

Probability: Random experiment, outcomes, and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Union and Intersection of events. Complementary, elementary, and composite events. Definition of probability—classical and statistical—examples. Elementary theorems on probability-simple problems. Conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem—simple problems. Random variable as function on a sample space. Binomial distribution, examples of random experiments giving rise to Binomial distribution.

NDA Syllabus 2023 for Paper 2

NDA syllabus for Paper 2 comprises General Ability Test (GAT) which includes the topics and sub-topics from General Knowledge (GK), English, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, General Science, and Current Events. A total of 150 questions are asked in this paper, out of which 50 questions are from English and the remaining 100 questions are from General Knowledge. The total marks allotted to this section are 600.

NDA Exam Pattern

The candidates who are preparing for NDA II Exam 2022, must be familiar with the exam pattern that is followed by UPSC. We have discussed the details for NDA 2 2022 exam pattern below:

1. The exam will be conducted in an offline mode

NDA Cut off

UPSC releases NDA Cut Off every year after the successful completion of the recruitment process. The cut-off marks are released separately for both the written exam and the final selection. Candidates appearing for the NDA 2022 exam must check out the previous year's cut-off to determine the number of good attempts. It is affected by many factors such as the number of vacancies, the difficulty level of the paper, number of applicants, etc.

The cutoff for this year will be released along with the result on the UPSC official website after a few days of the conduction of the National Defence Academy exam.

NDA Qualification

Candidates must have the requisite qualification to be able to take the NDA exam and proceed further in the recruitment process. The details of the educational qualifications required by the candidates are illustrated here in the table.

NDA Course (Indian Army)

12th Class pass of the 10 + 2 School Education pattern or equivalent exam performed by the State Education Board or University.

NDA Course (Indian Navy & Indian Air Force) & 107th and 108th INAC Course

12th Pass of the 10 + 2 School Education pattern or equivalent to Physics and Mathematics by a State Education Board or a University.

Note: Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

NDA How to Apply

For the NDA 2 2022 recruitment process, the apply online link was activated on the official website of UPSC from 18 May to 07 June 2022. Those who were interested, eligible, and prepared had filled out the application for which the exam will be conducted on 04 September 2022. Candidates must keep scanned copies of their photograph, signature, and other related documents ready, which are to be uploaded in the NDA 2022 application form.
